Alice Leadbeter, from Cambridgeshire, is training hard to ensure she is ready to complete the 26.2 mile distance in the 2017 London Marathon on Sunday 23rd April. She aims to raise £2,000 for Mothers’ Union and help provide Christian care for families in need, at home and abroad.
Alice has come up with several really exciting ways for people to get involved and we would like to invite you to join in:
+ Children’s Lent Challenge: To get children thinking about how lucky they are to learn to read, we are encouraging youth groups, church groups, schools and even individuals to pledge to give up some screen time per day for a week and get sponsored to spend the time reading instead. All sponsorship money will go towards Mothers’ Union’s Literacy & Financial Education Programme. Do you know a group that would like to take part? Contact us to request resources, including a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the challenge.
+ Your own 5k Run/Walk: To support Alice’s running efforts, could you train to run 5km this Autumn? Watch this space for more information coming soon.
+ Sponsor Alice: Visit Alice's Virgin Money Giving page.
Alice is a teacher and a mum of three whose Mum, Susan Baker, has been a member for over thirty years. She recalls “Mum has been a member of Mothers’ Union for most of my life. I always admired the work she did in the local prison, running parenting courses and supporting the women’s shelter through the charity.”
Alice’s Mum is now in fact the Mothers’ Union Diocesan President of Ely and Alice herself recently became a member as well. On this opportunity to fundraise for Mothers’ Union Alice says;
“The opportunity to represent Mothers’ Union in the London Marathon allows me to capitalise on my role as an ambassador, passing on all the amazing things that Mothers’ Union does to a wide, diverse audience. As well as informing people about Mothers’ Union who have possibly not heard about it before and raising the money that makes such a difference to so many people, my true goal is to get more people actively involved and supporting the work and projects as this would have a far longer, positive effect on Mothers’ Union. I see the actual running of the marathon purely as a catalyst for these far more important goals.”
