Working in The Province of Sri Lanka

Until 1970, the Church of Ceylon was part of the Church of India, Pakistan, Burma, and Ceylon. The Church continues as extra-provincial under the Archbishop of Canterbury; there are two dioceses, Colombo and Kurunegala.

The first branch of Mothers' Union was opened in 1908. There are currently 40 Mothers' Union branches in Sri-Lanka and groups in the north and east of the island that had folded due to the civil war have been revived. Many branches are involved within their local communities offering awareness and counselling programmes. Support is being given to a self-help sewing project among the widows of the east and more work with them is planned for the future. One group has started a medical clinic while others offer literacy classes. Much time is spent in fellowship and prayer in Sri Lanka, underpinning all that is done practically for those around them.

Mothers' Union supported the victims of the Tsunami, in conjunction with the Church of Ceylon, and with the help of a relief grant from Mary Sumner House, and continues to give them aid.
