Working in The Province of North India
The Church was inaugurated in 1970 and includes the Anglican Church, the United Church of Northern India (Congregationalist and Presbyterian). The Methodist Church (British and Australian Conferences), the Council of Baptist Churches in Northern India, the Church of the Brethren in India, and the Disciples of Christ.
The Women's Fellowship for Christian Service (WFCS) was formally re-affiliated to Mothers' Union in 2001, since when links have been greatly strengthened. Mothers' Union has been active in India since 1889, when soldiers' wives met in Trimulgherry. There have been many Mothers' Union workers there, starting with Anna Rix in 1909. Mothers' Union has for some time supported the Brides School in Marathwada diocese.
One of the main projects currently undertaken by the WFCS in North India is their crucial HIV/AIDS awareness work. They have been working alongside the Synodical Board of Health Services with this project, also running workshops, seminars and lectures for women throughout many dioceses. In order to ensure knowledge is passed right down to the grass roots, June 2005 saw the launch of the first training programme for leaders in the dioceses. Fifty leaders participated in the new training programme with the hope that they will return to their individual dioceses with the responsibility of imparting this vital learning.
The WFCS are also involved in vital advocacy work in North India, especially focussing on rural areas where it is seen that the majority of inhabitants live in severe poverty. Mothers' Union members are supporting the Church of North India in seeing the start of a Synodical Board of Social Services primarily to serve the poor and advocate on behalf of women, children, dalits and tribes. Mothers' Union members have been involved with equipping, educating and organising its rural units to understand and respond to many of the issues faced by the poorest in their communities. Many lives have already started changing with Mothers' Union members launching several income-generated projects in three of its diocese. Members are busy fundraising and planning to open further projects like these, supported by the government and the Church of North India.
Mothers' Union sent a grant to the WFCS to help those affected by the tsunami in December 2004, particularly on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In the first few days following the disaster a Relief and Rehabilitation Programme was set up and a team of 53 volunteers were working around the clock to provide immediate relief in terms of food, clothing, medicine and personal counselling.
