Working in The Province of All Ireland
(Includes the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland)
The MU began in Ireland in 1887. Like the Church of Ireland, which embraces Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the MU operates in two jurisdictions, north and south of the border. There are 12 dioceses.
The MU members in All-Ireland represent a wide range of age and interests. Membership offers fellowship and prayerful support through regular branch meetings, worship and occasional seminars and conferences.
Many branches throughout the Province run their own community projects that support family life.
Throughout Ireland Mothers' Union members bring a variety of practical help and support to their parish and community - providing holidays for people who otherwise would not get a rest, supporting woman's refuges, people who live on the streets, and many more projects.
Local initiatives also include marriage preparation, parenting courses, parent and toddler groups, child contact centres and other community outreach projects. Following training sessions for MU Parenting Programme facilitators, local parenting courses are taking place around Ireland.
Many dioceses are advocates of fair trade, ensuring that producers get a fair deal for their products, and are involved with various forms of social policy work.
