Working in The Province of Australia

Mothers' Union was established in Australia at the end of the nineteenth century. The Province comprises 23 dioceses, with a range of theological, demographic and geographical differences demonstrating Diversity in Unity. Programmes in Australia are run on a diocesan basis, because of problems of distance: it takes 7 hours to fly from Brisbane to Perth, and two branches in Queensland are 1500km apart.

There is a large indigenous membership in North Queensland made up of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islanders and Australian South Sea Islanders. Metropolitan dioceses of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth are welcoming Sudanese immigrants to their branches, and gaining an understanding about refugees who arrive in Australia without identification.

Members in South Australia are working with asylum seekers held in detention centres, visiting and corresponding with them, demonstrating love to those in vulnerable situations.

MU Australia give generous support to the workers' programme overseas as well as in their own province.

Parenting
Australia has recently launched a parenting programme, with pilots in New South Wales and Western Australia, designed to tackle issues faced by parents world wide.

Supporting Marriage
With the help of a regularly updated 'Marriage Kit', and a leaflet 'Why Marry?' , Mothers' Union Australia promotes marriage and marriage preparation courses.
