Marriage
Mothers' Union believes that a happy marriage is of great value to family life. Through projects, faith and policy we promote and strengthen marriage, whilst supporting those who have had damaging experiences of married life.
Mothers' Union members, single or married, male or female, are pushing counter-cultural boundaries in their work, and finding new ways of helping married couples in their unique relationships.
As Mothers' Union explores ways of supporting marriage around the world through marriage preparation, marriage support, and separation and divorce recovery, our policy work urges governments to do the same.
We believegovernments should commit to support durable partnerships and stable families; tax benefits should support marriage, thereby giving a clear signal to society that marriage is known to provide benefit to society as a whole. Mothers' Union also seeks to encourage governmentto fund initiatives that will support relationships before breakdown, and initiatives which nurture and support couples and families experiencing the trauma of separation.
Alongside seeking fiscal support for marriage, Mothers' Union believes marriage needs to be portrayed in a positive light in the media - not as a fairytale ideal, but as a real relationship, where the benefits of commitment and the implications of separation are spoken of realistically, and the benefits of happiness, stability and security, particularly for children, are known and valued.
Mothers' Union works extensively in support of marriage through provision of marriage support, through relationship support, and through supporting couples through separation and divorce. In 2008 Mothers' Union will launch Loving for Life a training for facilitators which will enable them to support clergy inthe provision of marriage preparation.
