Policy & Faith

Policy & Faith

The Christian Gospel is full of political implications. Two core themes in the Bible are caring for God's world and caring for others. Policy work enables us to put such Gospel values into practice by working towards justice, compassion and reconciliation. The challenge of engaging with the real issues that make up the political landscape cannot be ignored by people of faith. By living out Christ's teaching and mission in this way, we bring about his kingdom on earth.

The Mothers' Union views policy as integral to its mission. Policy work helps to identify how best to carry the values of our faith into family life, the workplace and the public arena. As we think about our Christian beliefs and policies, we gain a deeper insight into what God is like, which in turn feeds our spirituality.

In other words, God can use policy to reveal himself to us and to others. The more we know of God, the stronger our relationship with him becomes and the more we become aware of the needs of others. For this reason, faith and policy work are in constant dialogue at the Mothers' Union.

Along with policy statements, discussion papers and briefings, the Mothers' Union has resources for prayers and reflection on current issues in society, spiritual retreats, and prayer days. Only through information, knowledge and reflection can inspired policy be formulated, and only through awareness of the world around us can we hear the message of God.

Policy Prayer
Lord, we pray that through our policies
we may create a vision of your kingdom here on earth.
We ask not to fly from the world but to be engaged within it;
where there is injustice let us find ways to eradicate it,
where peoples' basic human rights are so exploited
that they have not life to call their own -may we not stand aside
but fight for equality and for dignity.
May we be a voice for change where there is none,
may our hearts not grow cold when our simple compassion
might find our neighbour's food and clothing.
May our politics be based upon Gospel values,
our motives be to serve our God alone,
and through our God, to transform this world.
Amen
