Starting a Mothers' Union in your Church
Wherever Mothers’ Union exists in the world, we express our Christian faith by the transformation of families and communities worldwide.
We aim to achieve this by promoting the importance of marriage, supporting families and nurturing faith, with members sensitively spreading the news of a God who loves and cares for us all.
Our governance, leadership, and programmes are driven by and undertaken through members within their own communities. Local level church-based groups are the way in which Mothers’ Union carries out its charitable activity. Each member subscribes to the same values; the moral and ethical codes that are central to the ways in which we operate.
A typical group will:
- Provide space and opportunity for prayer and fellowship.
- Work with the church to set up opportunities for community outreach.
- Find ways to support Mothers’ Union around the world, ecouraging empowerment and development where needed.
- Provide positive support for local couples and families – from marriage preparation, to parents' groups, to supporting the faith life of children in the church.
Mothers’ Union groups come in many forms and there is no set way of ‘being’ a Mothers’ Union group. Whatever the setting, location or demographics, all share the same vision – to make God’s love known by supporting families and communities. It’s this commitment to families and the power of faith in action that is the defining feature of a Mothers’ Union group.
Why start a group?
Mothers’ Union membership is an ideal way for Christians to authenticate their commitment to church and community by showing the power of faith in action as well as being a great way to make friends and meet people with similar values. Each group comes together in its own unique way, but local membership usually entails paying an annual subscription and being formally enrolled as members by senior clergy at a special service.
Each Mothers’ Union group works closely with their church (however not all groups are linked to churches) but is also part of the wider Mothers’ Union.
How to start a group?
If there is interest from within your church in the mission and values of Mothers’ Union or a specific ministry that could be run by Mothers’ Union then setting up a group might just be the thing your church needs.
